Hemophilia
Hemophilia is an inherited bleeding disorder that affects
mostly males. There are two types of
Hemophilia – A and B (Christmas Disease) – caused by low levels or complete absence
of a blood clotting protein essential to stop bleeding.
Patients with hemophilia A lack the blood clotting protein, factor VIII;
patients with hemophilia B lack factor IX.
Hemophilia is treated by replacing the missing clotting factor in the blood and,
with proper care, patients can live healthy lives.
In the
U.S., there are approximately 20,000 hemophilia patients, and nearly 400 babies are
born with the disorder each year.

Special Considerations for Hemophilia Patients
Patients need additional monitoring and support to
maintain the safe and effective use of their medications.
For example, each month, our pharmacy team may remind patients about the importance
of reporting frequency and type of bleeding episodes. In addition, they
may monitor the impact of hemophilia on the patient’s quality of life.
