Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV)

Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV)

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the most common respiratory disease in infants and young children, infecting virtually all infants by the age of two years.

Infants born prematurely and infants with chronic lung disease are at risk for severe RSV.  RSV outbreaks occur on a yearly basis, from early fall through late spring.  With proper medication, severe RSV can be prevented.

Your Care at Ascend SpecialtyRx

Ascend SpecialtyRx manages RSV patients based on the most recent guidelines provided by the American Academy of Pediatrics.  Our pharmacy was one of the first to treat RSV, since the introduction of the drug, Synagis®, in 2000. Our highly trained pharmacy team assists pediatric specialists and healthcare providers in determining dosing and treatment schedules to ensure that each patient receives the necessary course of therapy throughout the RSV season.

Ascend SpecialtyRx maintains full availability of all needed medications and medical supplies, and we offer around-the-clock emergency support and patient counseling, as well as confidential, flexible and on-time delivery options.

Our expert pharmacy team works closely with each patient and their healthcare providers to help ensure that patients take their medications as prescribed and monitors for any side effects from the medications.

Special Considerations for RSV Patients

Patients need additional monitoring and support to maintain the safe and effective use of their medications.  For example, each month our pharmacy team strives to acquire every child’s most recent weight to ensure proper dosing.  Our team may also ask about the baby’s overall health, and address any concerns the parents may have regarding treatment.
